Hybrid powertrain + AWD = unique value
The 2023 Sienna switches the entire lineup to a hybrid system: a 2.5liter four cylinder paired with electric motors and an eCVT.
For the XSE AWD, the combined net output is about 245 horsepower.
Fuel economy is exceptional for a vehicle this size and utility: for the AWD version, EPA estimates ~35 mpg combined (city/highway)
The all wheel drive system is the Electronic OnDemand AWD version meaning it uses an electric motor to power the rear wheels when extra traction is needed rather than a heavy mechanical driveshaft/transfer case.
Why is this a strong point? Because you get a minivans utility + the benefits of AWD (better for snow, rain, slippery roads) + much better fuel economy than a traditional V6minivan or large SUV. For the Michigan City area (where winters, lake effect snow, and inclement weather are not uncommon), having AWD is a real plus.
In many minivan lineups, AWD is optional or even absent; in the Sienna's case the hybrid + available AWD gives you a combination that is somewhat rare in the segment.
2. Strong practicality & family friendly design
Seating for 7 passengers (in the 7passenger version of XSE) gives flexibility for family, friends, carpooling.
Large interior volumes: According to specs, passenger volume ~159.7cuft, interior volume ~193.2cuft.
Sliding side doors (dual power sliding doors) + handsfree liftgate (depending on package) make loading/unloading easier. Especially helpful with kids, strollers, cargo.
Cargo space is generous when seats are folded or removed, you get strong flexibility for luggage, gear, sports equipment.
The ride height and access are more van friendly compared to many large SUVs (which can sit high). This means easier entry/exit for kids or older passengers.
In one review, the drivers sight lines were noted as excellent and the second row captains chairs had good visibility.
Towing capacity: While you wont tow as much as a full size SUV/towing truck, the Sienna AWD is rated to tow up to ~3,500lbs in many configurations.
For a buyer who wants both everyday commuting + occasional road trips + winter capability + family gear flexibility, this combination is compelling.
3. Trim and styling the XSE brings sporty touches
The XSE trim gives you more than just base utility it adds style and premium feel: sport tuned suspension, 20inch wheels (on some versions), black side rocker panels, sport mesh front grille in metallic black finish.
Interior upgrades: SofTextrimmed seats (synthetic leather), heated front seats, four zone automatic climate control, large infotainment screen (depending on options).
These styling and comfort upgrades help the vehicle appeal not just as the family van but as a vehicle you'll be proud to drive. That can matter when you're driving daily, dropping kids, commuting, etc.
So the XSE gives you utility and a little bit of style, which is a strong combination.
4. Safety & technology modern features
The Sienna comes standard (in 2023) with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) suite: pre collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, adaptive cruise control, etc.
In the XSE you also get more technology: good infotainment (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto compatibility)
For a vehicle with kids, passengers and road trip capability, having strong safety and convenience tech is a big plus.
The AWD system itself contributes to safety in lower traction conditions (snow, rain) as discussed.
Fuel savings & long term cost advantages
Because its a hybrid, you'll spend less on fuel relative to older minivans with nonhybrid V6 engines. For households that drive a lot (commutes, school runs, trips), that adds up.
