The energy efficiency that makes EVs more climate-friendly also helps with performance. EVs are much quieter when accelerating and cruising, providing a more mellow driving experience than you’re used to. They also accelerate more quickly, thanks to their lack of transmission.

Less Overall Maintenance

Electric vehicles are easier to maintain, with fewer complicated components than combustion engines. With an EV, you won’t have to worry as much about maintenance costs — including oil changes.

Long-Term Savings

The average American spends thousands of dollars on gas in a year. Saving on gas and taking advantage of tax breaks and other incentives offered by the federal government helps make up the difference in cost between EVs and gas-powered cars, with the added bonus that you’ll no longer need to worry about fluctuations in gas prices.

The Disadvantages of EV Ownership

Charging Availability

While electric charging stations are far more widely available now than they were just a few years ago, it will take time to get to the point where charging your car is as convenient as stopping at the gas station.

Shorter Range

For now, gas-powered cars are able to travel greater distances without refueling, meaning that an EV may be a challenge for someone who regularly goes on long road trips. For the average American commuter, though, an EV will have more than enough range.

Limited Options

EV options are still fairly limited compared to traditional cars, so you may not be able to find the design of your dreams (yet). That said, manufacturers are developing new models all the time to keep pace with demand.
