Kia Sportage Tire Pressure: The Right PSI and the TPMS Light
Correct tire pressure keeps a Sportage handling the way Kia intended and helps your tires last. This guide uses the 2027 Sportage owner's manual (code NQ5A on ownersmanual.kia.com), read October 28, 2026, for the cold tire pressures by tire size, where to find the label, how often to check, what to expect as Michigan City temperatures drop, and what the tire pressure light means. The Sportage Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid have their own manual, and other model years can differ, so check the label on your vehicle.

What is the recommended tire pressure for a Kia Sportage?
For the 2027 Sportage, the owner's manual lists 35 psi (2.4 bar, 240 kPa) front and rear for the 235/65R17, 235/60R18 and 235/55R19 tires, measured cold, at both normal and maximum load. The compact spare tire, if equipped, takes 60 psi (4.2 bar, 420 kPa). Your vehicle's figures are on the tire label on the driver's side center pillar.
2027 Sportage tire pressures by size
| Tire size | Wheel size | Cold pressure, front and rear |
|---|---|---|
| 235/65R17 | 7.0J x 17" | 35 psi (2.4 bar, 240 kPa) |
| 235/60R18 | 7.5J x 18" | 35 psi (2.4 bar, 240 kPa) |
| 235/55R19 | 7.5J x 19" | 35 psi (2.4 bar, 240 kPa) |
| T135/90D17 compact spare, steel wheel (if equipped) | 4B x 17" | 60 psi (4.2 bar, 420 kPa) |
From the Tires and wheels specifications topic (t00840) of the 2027 Sportage web manual (NQ5A) on ownersmanual.kia.com, read October 28, 2026. The manual gives one figure for normal load and maximum load, front and rear.
Your tire size is printed on the tire sidewall. Kia says to use the same tire size originally supplied with the vehicle when replacing tires. For driving at high altitude, the manual notes that atmospheric pressure decreases, so check the tire pressure and add air when necessary; it lists 1.5 psi of additional pressure per kilometer above sea level.
Where to find the Sportage tire pressure label
The 2027 manual says the tire label located on the driver's side center pillar gives the tire pressures recommended for your vehicle, and that all specifications (sizes and pressures) can be found on a label attached to the driver's side center pillar. Its TPMS section refers to the tire inflation pressure label on the driver's side center pillar outer panel.
If your Sportage has tires of a different size than the label shows, Kia says you should determine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.
How to check tire pressure the way Kia recommends
Kia says to check tire pressure when the tires are cold, meaning the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km), and to check the spare each time you check the other tires. Warm tires normally exceed recommended cold pressures by 4 to 6 psi (28 to 41 kPa); do not release air from warm tires to adjust them, or they will be underinflated.
- Use a good quality gauge. You cannot tell if your tires are properly inflated simply by looking at them; radial tires may look properly inflated even when they are underinflated.
- Remove the valve cap from the tire valve stem and press the gauge firmly onto the valve.
- If the pressure is low, add air until you reach the recommended amount. If you overfill, release air by pushing on the metal stem in the center of the valve, then recheck with the gauge.
- Put the valve caps back on. They help prevent leaks by keeping out dirt and moisture.
Kia's checking section says to check your tires once a month or more, and its underinflation warning says to check and correct pressure at least twice a month and before any long trips. You can also see tire pressures in the assist mode on the instrument cluster; they display 1 to 2 minutes after you start driving ("Drive to display" shows when stopped), and Kia notes the cluster reading may differ from a tire gauge. The unit (psi, kPa or bar) can be changed in the user settings mode on the cluster.
Sportage tire pressure in cold weather
Light on a cold morning
In winter or cold weather, the low tire pressure telltale may appear if the pressure was set in warm weather. Kia says this does not mean the TPMS is malfunctioning, because lower temperatures lower tire pressure.
Recheck when it changes
Kia says to check and adjust tire pressure when you drive from a warm area to a cold area or the reverse, or when the outside temperature is extremely high or low.
Snow tires
If you mount snow tires, Kia says to use radial tires of the same size and load range as the original tires, on all four wheels. Check local, state and municipal rules before installing studded tires.
All season tires
All season tires are marked ALL SEASON and/or M+S on the sidewall. Kia says snow tires have better snow traction and may be more appropriate in some areas.
From the Low tire pressure position telltale, Winter driving and All season tires topics of the 2027 Sportage web manual, read October 28, 2026.
What the Sportage tire pressure light means
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) detects the pressure of each tire and displays it on the cluster. When the TPMS warning indicators appear, one or more tires are significantly underinflated, and the low tire pressure position telltale shows which one. Kia says the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance.
If the telltale appears, the manual says to:
- Immediately reduce your speed, avoid hard cornering and anticipate increased stopping distances.
- Stop and check your tires as soon as possible.
- Inflate the tires to the pressure on the label on the driver's side center pillar outer panel.
When the TPMS has a problem, the low tire pressure telltale blinks for about one minute and then stays on; Kia says to have the system checked by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible. Nearby radio transmitters, snow chains or electronic devices used in the vehicle can interfere with the TPMS. After you mount the spare, the malfunction indicator may appear because the spare wheel's sensor is not yet activated. Our service team can check tires and the TPMS; schedule service online.

Kia Sportage tire pressure questions
What should the tire pressure be on a 2027 Kia Sportage?
The 2027 Sportage owner's manual (NQ5A) lists 35 psi (2.4 bar, 240 kPa) front and rear for all three full size tire sizes (235/65R17, 235/60R18 and 235/55R19), at normal and maximum load, measured cold. The compact spare tire (if equipped) takes 60 psi (4.2 bar, 420 kPa).
Where is the tire pressure label on a Sportage?
The manual says the tire label located on the driver's side center pillar gives the tire pressures recommended for your vehicle.
Should I check Sportage tire pressure hot or cold?
Cold. Kia defines cold tires as the vehicle not driven for at least three hours or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km). Warm tires normally exceed recommended cold pressures by 4 to 6 psi (28 to 41 kPa), and Kia says not to release air from warm tires to adjust the pressure.
How often should I check my Sportage tire pressure?
The manual's checking section says to check your tires once a month or more, and its tire underinflation warning says to check and correct the pressure at least twice a month and before any long trips. Check the spare each time you check the other tires.
Why is my Sportage tire pressure light on when it is cold out?
The manual says that in winter or cold weather the low tire pressure telltale may appear if the pressure was adjusted in warm weather, because lower temperatures lower tire pressure. It does not mean the TPMS is malfunctioning; check and adjust the pressures.
Why is my Sportage tire pressure light still on after adding air?
Kia says that when filling tires with more air, the conditions to turn off the low tire pressure telltale may not appear because of the system's margin of error, and that the telltale turns off when the tire pressure is above the recommended tire inflation pressure.
