Kia Dashboard Warning Lights: What They Mean

Kia's manual splits dashboard symbols into warning lights, which indicate situations that require extra attention, and indicator lights. This guide follows the warning and indicator light chapters of a 2027 Kia owner's manual on Kia's U.S. owner's manual site, read October 26, 2026, and lists what Kia says to do for each. Lights and equipment vary by model, so check the manual for your Kia.

What should I do when a Kia warning light comes on?

Kia says all warning lights should be off after the engine starts; one that is still on indicates a situation that needs immediate attention. For low engine oil pressure, a charging system fault or low brake fluid, the manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop. For most other warning lights, it says to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

What happens at start-up

When you set the ENGINE START/STOP button to ON, the manual describes many warning lights coming on for about 3 seconds and then going off. The airbag light takes about 3 to 6 seconds, and the engine oil pressure light stays on until the engine is started.

Kia's note on warning lights is short: make sure all warning lights are OFF after starting the engine. If any light is still ON, it indicates a situation that needs immediate attention.

Warning lights that mean stop in a safe place

For these three, Kia's first instruction is to drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop your vehicle.

Warning lightWhat it meansWhat Kia says to do
Engine oil pressure warning lightEngine oil pressure is low. Kia says that when this is due to insufficient engine oil, an enhanced engine protection system that limits engine power is activated.Turn the engine off and check the oil level; add oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected. Continued driving may cause engine failure, and serious engine damage may result if the engine is not stopped right away.
Charging system warning lightA malfunction with the alternator or electrical charging system.Turn the engine off and check the alternator drive belt for looseness or breakage, then have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
Parking brake and brake fluid warning light, with the parking brake releasedThe brake fluid level in the reservoir is low. With the engine stopped, check the brake fluid right away and add fluid as required, then check the brake components for leaks. If there is a leak, the light stays on or the brakes do not work properly, do not drive; have the vehicle towed to an authorized Kia dealer and inspected.

Brake warnings at a glance

ABS light only

A malfunction with the Anti-lock Brake System. Kia says the normal braking system still works without ABS assistance; have the vehicle inspected.

ABS plus parking brake light

The EBD system warning: the brake system will not work normally, and sudden braking can become dangerous. Avoid high speed driving and abrupt braking, and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

If brakes fail while driving

Kia says its dual-diagonal system still brakes two wheels if one half fails, with more pedal travel and pressure needed. Shift to a lower gear for engine braking and stop as soon as it is safe.

Warning lights that need a dealer inspection

When these show a malfunction, the manual says to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Warning lightWhat it means
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (check engine)A malfunction with the emission control system, the engine or the vehicle powertrain. Driving with it on may damage the emission control systems and affect drivability or fuel economy, and catalytic converter damage is possible.
Airbag warning lightA malfunction with the SRS (airbags).
Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) warning lightA malfunction with the power steering.
Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light (if equipped)A malfunction with the EPB. Kia notes it can also come on when the ESC indicator shows ESC is not working properly, which is not an EPB malfunction.
LED headlamp warning lightOn: an LED headlamp malfunction. Blinking: a malfunction with an LED headlamp related part. Kia says continued driving with it on or blinking can reduce low beam life.
Forward Safety warning light, yellowForward Safety of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is deselected, disabled or has a malfunction. If it stays on after the sensor is uncovered or unblocked, have the vehicle inspected. Blinking red means the function is operating.
ESC indicator, steadyA malfunction with the ESC system. A blinking ESC light means ESC is operating.

The low tire pressure light

A steady low tire pressure light means one or more tires are significantly under-inflated, and the LCD display shows which one. If the light blinks for about 60 seconds and then stays on, or keeps blinking on and off about every 3 seconds, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System has a malfunction and Kia says to have the vehicle inspected.

Kia warns that significantly low tire pressure makes the vehicle unstable and increases braking distances, and that the TPMS cannot alert you to severe and sudden tire damage. If the vehicle feels unstable, take your foot off the accelerator, brake gradually with light force and move slowly to a safe position off the road.

Kia warning light FAQ

Why do Kia warning lights come on when I start the car?

Many lights in the 2027 Kia owner's manual we used come on for about 3 seconds when the ENGINE START/STOP button is set to ON and then go off; the airbag light stays on for about 3 to 6 seconds. Kia says to make sure all warning lights are off after starting the engine, because a light that is still on indicates a situation that needs immediate attention.

What does the Kia oil pressure light mean?

Engine oil pressure is low. Kia says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level, adding oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer; continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure.

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on in my Kia?

Kia calls it the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL): a malfunction with the emission control system, the engine or the powertrain. Kia says driving with it on may damage the emission control systems and affect drivability or fuel economy, and catalytic converter damage is possible, so have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Why is my brake light on when the parking brake is off?

Kia says that if the parking brake and brake fluid warning light is on with the parking brake released, the brake fluid level is low. Stop in a safe place and check it. If there is a leak, the light stays on or the brakes do not work properly, do not drive the vehicle; have it towed to an authorized Kia dealer and inspected.

What does a blinking immobilizer light mean on a Kia?

In the manual we used, the smart key immobilizer light blinks for a few seconds when the smart key is not in the vehicle. It also blinks when the smart key battery is weak; Kia says you can still start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the smart key. A blinking light can also mean an immobilizer malfunction, which needs a dealer inspection.

Why did some lights flash when the engine restarted by itself?

With Idle Stop and Go, Kia says some warning lights (ABS, ESC, ESC OFF, MDPS or parking brake) may turn on for a few seconds when the engine restarts automatically, because of low battery voltage. It does not mean the system is malfunctioning.
