Kia EV9 Range: EPA Estimates by Trim and How to Get More

How far an EV9 goes on a charge depends on the trim, the battery, the weather and how it is driven. This guide uses the EV9 page on kia.com for the 2026 EPA-estimated range and battery of each trim, and the 2026 EV9 owner's manual (published on ownersmanual.kia.com under code MV1) for what affects the distance to empty and how to stretch it, both read October 28, 2026. Other model years can differ.

What is the range of a Kia EV9?

Kia lists EPA-estimated all-electric ranges for the 2026 EV9 of 230 miles (Light RWD, 76.1 kWh battery), 305 miles (Light Long Range RWD, 99.8 kWh), 283 miles (Wind AWD and Land AWD) and 280 miles (GT-Line AWD). Kia says these are based on EPA estimates on a full battery charge, that actual range will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, vehicle maintenance, charging practice, battery age, weather, temperature and the vehicle's condition, and that battery capacity will decrease with time and use.

From the 2026 EV9 trim features and the range disclaimers on kia.com/us/en/ev9, read October 28, 2026. Kia lists the Land AWD's features as added to or in place of the Wind AWD's, and does not list a different battery for it. Kia says the figures are based on EPA estimates on a full battery charge and that battery capacity will decrease with time and use.

Kia.com lists 19 inch alloy wheels on the Light RWD, 20 inch alloy wheels on the Land AWD and 21 inch alloy wheels on the GT-Line AWD. For towing, kia.com notes that towing may significantly reduce electric range. You can also see the new EV9 at Michigan City Kia.

What affects your EV9's distance to empty

The 2026 EV9 owner's manual says driving range depends on driving style, electrical load usage, environment and high voltage battery energy, so the distance to empty shown on the vehicle may be higher or lower than the certification range. It explains each one:

  • Driving style: the higher the speed, or the more frequent the acceleration and deceleration, the more the distance to empty is reduced.
  • Electrical loads: air conditioning, heaters, lamps and other auxiliary loads; as their use increases, the distance to empty falls.
  • Environment: snow, rain, high winds or low temperatures, uphill driving, and slippery or rough road surfaces reduce it.
  • High voltage battery energy: proportional to the state of charge, but it may vary with battery temperature and the battery's state of health.

The manual also says the distance to empty is displayed differently according to the drive mode selected in the drive mode integrated control system.

EV9 range in winter

Cold lowers range, for now

The manual says the distance to empty decreases when the high voltage battery temperature is low in winter. It is not a permanent change; if the temperature rises, the distance to empty is restored.

Heated seats over cabin heat

Kia says using a heated seat and reducing air heating in winter is very helpful, and that setting the climate to 72°F (22°C) auto allows optimal energy consumption driving.

Pre-heat while plugged in

With scheduled charging and climate, you can set a departure time and target cabin temperature. The manual says that in cold weather, pre-scheduled heating helps enhance electric vehicle performance by heating the vehicle in advance; the vehicle must be connected to the charger at the scheduled time.

Battery conditioning

Battery conditioning mode (if equipped) helps keep charging performance at room temperature levels when the high voltage battery temperature is high or low, such as in hot summers or cold winters. Kia notes it uses battery energy, which may reduce driving range, and it can run on the way to a DC charging station set as a navigation waypoint or destination.

From the Impact on distance to empty, Charging and climate, EV settings and Winter driving topics of the 2026 EV9 web manual (MV1), read October 28, 2026. Kia.com also lists a Cold Climate Range Preserving Heat Pump among the features added at the Wind AWD trim.

Kia tips for getting more range

The 2026 EV9 manual lists these operating tips to improve driving range:

  • Do not speed. As electric vehicles speed up, air resistance increases rapidly.
  • Avoid rapid acceleration, which uses a lot of energy, and rapid deceleration, which restricts motor regenerative braking. Keep the accelerator position constant and drive at a constant speed.
  • Set the temperature to 72°F (22°C) auto, and turn off the heater and air conditioner when you do not need them.
  • Use recirculation mode instead of fresh air mode, and use DRIVER ONLY mode for the heater and air conditioning when driving alone.
  • Close the windows completely while driving.
  • Always maintain the specified tire pressure and use tires made for electric vehicles.
  • Do not use unnecessary electrical components, load unnecessary items or mount parts that increase air resistance.

The manual adds that if the distance to empty has dropped because the vehicle learned your driving style or environment, it can rise again as you keep driving this way. Need a tire pressure check or a look at your EV9? You can schedule service online.

Range tools in the EV9

The EV9 has screens that help you see where energy goes. The manual says EV Economy History shows energy consumption with the date and distance of previous drives, and Electricity Use breaks current consumption into drivetrain, electronics, climate and battery care (the energy used to warm the battery in winter or cool it in summer).

The State Of Health screen shows the energy the battery can store: it is set to 100% at shipment and reflects the reduced ratio as the battery is used. The manual says natural degradation of the high voltage battery reduces the distance to empty over the life of the vehicle, and that a distance to empty reset at a workshop does not actually increase the range. If the high voltage battery level and temperature are too low in winter, power may be limited and a message tells you to charge the vehicle immediately.

Kia EV9 range questions

What is the range of the 2026 Kia EV9?

Kia lists EPA-estimated all-electric ranges of 230 miles for the 2026 EV9 Light RWD, 305 miles for the Light Long Range RWD, 283 miles for the Wind AWD and Land AWD, and 280 miles for the GT-Line AWD. Kia says actual range will vary.

Which EV9 has the longest range?

The 2026 EV9 Light Long Range RWD, with an EPA-estimated 305 miles from its 99.8 kWh battery, according to kia.com.

What size battery does the EV9 have?

Kia.com lists a 76.1 kWh battery for the 2026 EV9 Light RWD and a 99.8 kWh battery for the Light Long Range RWD, Wind AWD and GT-Line AWD. The Land AWD builds on the Wind AWD on kia.com.

Why does my EV9 show less range in winter?

The 2026 EV9 owner's manual says the distance to empty decreases when the high voltage battery temperature is low in winter, and that it is not a permanent change: if the temperature rises, the distance to empty is restored. Snow, rain, high winds and low temperatures also reduce it.

How can I get more range from my EV9?

The manual's tips include not speeding, avoiding rapid acceleration and deceleration, driving at a constant speed, setting the climate to 72°F (22°C) auto, using heated seats instead of heavy cabin heating in winter, using recirculation mode and DRIVER ONLY mode, closing the windows, keeping the specified tire pressure and not carrying unnecessary items.

Does EV9 range drop as the battery ages?

The manual says natural degradation of the high voltage battery occurs depending on the length of use of the vehicle, which reduces the distance to empty. The EV menu's State Of Health screen shows the energy the battery can store compared with 100% at the time of shipment.
