Kia Sorento Towing Capacity and Towing Guide

The Sorento's towing rating depends on its engine and version, so a pop-up camper that suits one Sorento can be too heavy for another. This guide lays out the trailer and tongue weight chart from the 2026 Kia owner's manual for the gas Sorento (published on ownersmanual.kia.com under code MQ4a and read October 27, 2026), what Trailer Stability Assist does, and Kia's rules for hitches, chains, wiring, hills and maintenance. The 2027 X-Pro figure is from kia.com. Towing requires additional equipment, and the manual for your vehicle is the final word.

What is the Kia Sorento towing capacity?

Kia's 2026 gas Sorento owner's manual lists 2,000 lb (907 kg) with trailer brakes for every version in its Standard row, and in its Package row 3,500 lb (1,588 kg) for the X-Line and 4,500 lb (2,041 kg) for the X-Pro with the 2.5L turbo. Without trailer brakes the limit is 1,650 lb (750 kg). Kia.com lists 4,500 lbs. for the 2027 Sorento X-Pro SX Prestige AWD.

From "If you decide to tow a trailer" in the 2026 Kia owner's manual (MQ4a, gas), read October 27, 2026. Kia.com (October 27, 2026): 4,500 lbs. of towing capacity available on the 2027 Sorento X-Pro SX Prestige AWD; towing requires additional equipment.

Kia's manual says the maximum safe weight should never exceed the maximum trailer weight with trailer brakes, and even that may be too heavy depending on how you use the trailer: speed, altitude, road grades, outside temperature, how often you tow and any special equipment on the vehicle all matter. Before towing, check that the total trailer weight, gross combination weight, gross vehicle weight, gross axle weight and tongue load are all within the limits. For extra equipment such as a towing kit, the manual says to consult an authorized Kia dealer.

Tongue weight and loading

Kia's rule for the Sorento: the trailer tongue should weigh a maximum of 10% of the total loaded trailer weight, and never more than the maximum tongue load in the chart. The tongue load counts toward the Sorento's gross vehicle weight (GVW), along with the vehicle's curb weight, cargo and passengers.

Put about 60% of the trailer load toward the front and about 40% toward the rear, never more weight in the rear than the front. Once the trailer is loaded, weigh the trailer and the tongue separately; if they are off, shifting items inside the trailer may fix it. Kia suggests a commercial scale or a highway patrol office equipped with scales.

Trailer Stability Assist

Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) works as part of the vehicle stability control. Kia lists what can make a trailer sway: high speed, strong crosswinds, improper overloading, sudden or overcorrected steering, and uneven roads.

TSA keeps analyzing the vehicle and trailer. When it detects swaying, it applies the brakes automatically to stabilize the vehicle, then stops once things are stable. Kia also suggests considering a sway control, which you can ask a trailer hitch dealer about.

Hitches

TopicWhat the manual says
Mounting pointsThe mounting holes for trailer hitches are on both sides of the underbody behind the rear tires.
Hitch typeThe bumpers are not intended for trailer hitches. Do not attach rental hitches or other bumper-type hitches; use only a frame-mounted hitch that does not attach to the bumper.
Holes in the bodyIf installing a hitch means drilling the body, seal the holes after the hitch is removed so exhaust carbon monoxide, dirt and water cannot get in.
Plate and lightsThe coupling device must not cover any part of the rear license plate or lights; if it does, remove or reposition it when it is not in use.
Kia accessoryA Kia trailer hitch accessory is available at an authorized Kia dealer.
Local rulesKia suggests checking with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles for trailer towing requirements first, since laws vary.

Safety chains, trailer brakes and wiring

Cross the safety chains under the trailer tongue so the tongue will not drop to the road if it separates from the hitch. Leave just enough slack to turn, never let them drag, and follow the hitch or trailer maker's instructions.

If your trailer has brakes, make sure they conform to state regulations and are properly installed and working, and do not tap into the Sorento's brake system. Kia says this setup is not a task for amateurs; use an experienced, competent trailer shop.

The trailer needs its own turn signal flasher and extra wiring. Use only an approved trailer wiring harness and genuine electrical connections rather than splicing into the vehicle's lights, and Kia says to have an authorized Kia dealer help install the harness. The Sorento can only detect a connected trailer when genuine accessories (tow bar and wiring harness) are used: after plugging in, press the brake pedal or use the turn signal so the system recognizes the trailer, and do the same after unplugging so assistance systems that were turned off come back on. You are still responsible for checking every trailer light by hand before and during the trip.

Driving with a trailer

Pre-trip check

Hitch and platform, safety chains, electrical connectors, lights, tires and mirrors. With electric trailer brakes, start rolling and apply the brake controller by hand to confirm they work.

Speed

Keep it moderate, under 60 mph (100 km/h). On a long uphill grade, no more than 45 mph (70 km/h) or the posted towing limit, whichever is lower.

Distance

Leave at least twice the usual gap to the vehicle ahead, and much more room before returning to your lane after a pass.

Turns and reversing

Swing wider than normal and signal early. To reverse, hold the bottom of the wheel and move your hand toward the side you want the trailer to go.

Grades

Slow down and shift to a lower gear before a long or steep downgrade. On grades over 6%, watch the coolant gauge; if it moves toward H (HOT) (or 260 °F/130 °C), pull over safely and let the engine idle.

Parking

Kia advises against parking on a hill with a trailer attached. If you must, chock the trailer wheels on the downhill side and follow the manual's parking steps.

Maintenance when you tow

A Sorento that regularly tows needs service more often. Kia singles out engine oil, axle lubricant, cooling system fluid and brake condition, says to check the transmission fluid more frequently, and recommends reviewing these before you start a trip.

Keep the trailer and hitch maintained as well, ideally checking them at the start of each day's driving, and make sure all hitch nuts and bolts are tight. If the coolant gauge shows overheating on a hot day or a climb, turn off the air conditioner and stop in a safe area to let the engine cool. Do not tow during the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km).

Kia Sorento towing questions

How much can a Kia Sorento tow?

In the 2026 Kia owner's manual for the gas Sorento, every version is rated for 2,000 lb (907 kg) with trailer brakes in the chart's Standard row. The chart's Package row raises that to 3,500 lb (1,588 kg) for the X-Line and 4,500 lb (2,041 kg) for the X-Pro with the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDi). Kia.com says 4,500 lbs. of towing capacity is available on the 2027 Sorento X-Pro SX Prestige AWD.

How much can a Sorento tow without trailer brakes?

The chart lists 1,650 lb (750 kg) without a trailer brake system for every version. If a loaded trailer weighs more than that, the manual says it needs its own adequate brakes.

What is the Sorento tongue weight limit?

The chart lists 280 lb (127 kg) for the 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDi) and 351 lb (159 kg) for the 2.5L turbo versions. The manual also says the trailer tongue should weigh a maximum of 10% of the total loaded trailer weight, within the maximum tongue load.

What does Trailer Stability Assist do?

Per the manual, Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) analyzes the vehicle and trailer for instability. When it detects swaying, it engages the brakes automatically to stabilize the vehicle, and it stops once the vehicle is stable.

How fast can I go when towing with a Sorento?

Kia says to drive at a moderate speed, less than 60 mph (100 km/h), and on a long uphill grade not to exceed 45 mph (70 km/h) or the posted towing speed limit, whichever is lower.

When can I start towing with a new Sorento?

After the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km). Kia says towing earlier may result in serious engine or transmission damage because the engine needs to break in.
